Frequently asked questions

concerning English courses

for children and the language school

Can my child participate in the course even though he/she is an absolute beginner?

In addition to our native speaker teachers being highly qualified, they have also taught English to children in several other countries. They have acquired the techniques with which they can understand the children and also make themselves understood.

They are able to remain within the framework provided by the English language, while conveying a wide range of ideas and thoughts by way of gestures, movements and imitation.

Furthermore, our teachers also learn Hungarian in our school, and there is always somebody at the reception who speaks Hungarian.

In addition to the above, a high level of emotional intelligence is a fundamental expectation for our teachers, and therefore, they are able to understand the problems of the students in any situation. They aim to create a maximum level of trust, respect and a positive teacher-student relationship, which makes the learning experience more motivating and enjoyable.

Why are the classes conducted in English only?

We fundamentally believe that it is an invaluable asset if children learn to not only speak, but also think in English at a young age.

For this, we keep continuously up to date with the methodology necessary for the efficient teaching of English to children, and in line with this expectation, our highly trained native teachers only use English in their communication with the children.

This approach is proven to improve children’s listening and reading comprehension skills, and also gives them the self-confidence to activate their acquired knowledge and express themselves in English.

In such an environment, students will actively participate in the classes and in the language learning process. This proven method creates the best results in the teaching of English as a foreign language to both children and adults.

What should you know about our teachers?

In Westport English School, children are always taught by teachers who are native speakers or native-level speakers of English.

First of all, let us clarify what is meant by “native-level”, but non-native speaker teachers.

These are English teachers with international certification who have lived for extensive periods of time in English-speaking countries.

In addition, they must be teachers who, in the opinion of both the management of the language schools and the native English speakers teaching at our school, have a native-level proficiency of English.

It may come as a surprise, but on the basis of our experience of many years, it happens that a native-level, foreign teacher is able to use the language and has better teaching skills than a mediocre native English-speaking teacher. Since it is our fundamental principle that the best English teachers possible work with children, we also hire native-level English teachers.

Nevertheless, in all cases, the classes will still be taught in English only, all the more so since these native-level English teachers are not necessarily Hungarians. On the whole we can say that:

  • the majority of our teachers are from the United Kingdom;
  • in all cases they have degrees;
  • all of them have internationally recognised teacher certifications, in most cases the CELTA qualification certified by the University of Cambridge, or the TESOL qualification granted by Trinity College London;
  • they have several years of relevant experience teaching English to children; and
  • they regularly participate in continued training courses for the teaching of young learners.

And what is the most important thing: they enjoy teaching children! 🙂

Why is it recommended that children be taught English by native speakers?

For all practical purposes, native English teachers will convey, current and commonly spoken English to the children without any mistakes, since they have a wealth of knowledge in this respect.

In addition, their native pronunciation will also have a positive effect on the development of the students’ listening and reading comprehension as well as their pronunciation, since the children will imitate and learn the native English intonation and pronunciation efficiently in the classroom.

Native English teachers instinctively feel and understand the language, and so they do not have to “force-feed” children with grammar examples to explain the meaning of an expression or the structure of a sentence.

What elevates Westport English School above the other English language schools?

Our native English teachers are our greatest assets. We only work with the most highly trained, motivated teachers, all of whom are specialised in teaching young learners, and all of whom have an international teaching certification.

Our teachers are not only experts in teaching. They also have the necessary emotional intelligence which is indispensable for bringing out the best performance from the children, and for making the English classes enjoyable and useful.

When studying with our native English teachers, children learn the correct English pronunciation of words more easily, while their attention is maintained by way of the entertaining and exciting tasks.

We work with small groups (4 to 10 children), which means that each of our students receive enough individual attention. Moreover, thanks to the group classes, they will have the courage to use their knowledge of English in the presence of others, and will also be able to make new friends more easily.

What methods are used for teaching English to children?

Our teaching methods are based on the most modern, state-of-the-art techniques. The class sessions are playful, interactive, practical, and also adjusted to the individual needs of the students.

With the key role played by the teacher, all communication between the students also takes place exclusively in English. The aim of this is for our native teachers to make the understanding and use of spoken English natural for your children.

The size of the group is kept small (min. 4 and max. 10 students), which means that each child is given enough individual attention. Thanks to our speaking-centred methods, the children acquire a proficiency of English that is also useful in real life situations.

The role play and situational activities, as well as the tasks requiring active participation are all pillars of our methodology.

We help our students remember words through a variety of playful situational tasks. Therefore, the English words and phrases they learn will become part of their active vocabulary, which they will be able to use at any time in real-life situations.

What are the advantages of teaching in small groups as opposed to one-on-one teaching?

Group-based classes produce better results because children prefer learning with their peers to learning with an adult only. It is important, however, that the group be kept small enough in order to allow sufficient attention for the children.

The size of our groups (4 to 10 children) is perfectly in line with this, and therefore the students can use and practice the knowledge they acquired. Furthermore, international experiences and feedback from our teachers also indicate that this is the ideal group size.

In addition, the group-based classes provide an opportunity for children to talk with several of their peers in English, thereby improving their self-confidence, developing their interactive communication skills, making friends, and contributing with others to the formation of a pleasant and joyful learning environment.

What will make English teaching entertaining and joyful for the children?

It is extremely important that a child should be active and enthusiastic in the classroom. After a long school day or week, however, they are often tired, and therefore it is indispensable that the classes be entertaining and interactive.

The classes fundamentally follow a textbook, which helps students to keep a direction of development and the structure, but in addition to the textbook materials, teachers also introduce a number of other activities, such as role-playing, English-language games, and experience-rich, task-based projects.

This way, in addition to the situational activities that vary across levels and age groups, teachers also use videos, songs and stories that are read out loud. The materials are always aligned with the children’s interest, which contribute to the improvement of their listening comprehension skill. Board games and movement-based games, on the other hand, develop interactive communication and teamwork between the young learners.

In addition to the above, it is worth mentioning that we create an interactive and exciting learning environment in which all children can discover and activate their command of English.

What else will your child learn in addition to English?

Although the focus point of the course is the teaching of English to children, our qualified teachers will also aim to develop the following skills, depending on the level and the age group: communication skills with each other, speaking before an audience, the ability to work in teams, problem-solving skills, self-confidence, etc.

Our role-playing and life-like situational activities may place young learners in situations that may still be unfamiliar to them, and as a result, they will be more confident in similar situations, no matter what language they use.

We consider the emphasis on the development of interpersonal communication so crucial because it may prove to be very useful in their subsequent lives, and prepare them for situations in which expressing themselves is of key importance.

Our other games and teamwork activities will also encourage the children to cooperate and learn to solve problems, which may prove to be useful skills during their school years.

In addition to the above, knowing English will make it easier for them to learn other foreign languages successfully as well.

How will this English course increase your child’s self-confidence in English and generally in life?

There are several studies that prove that those who speak at least two languages are more self-confident and successful in everyday life than those who only speak their native languages.

Learning and using a second language increases logical and communication skills, improves memory and enhances self-confidence.  Knowing a second language opens a door to another world, and students who open that door are more willing and confident in communicating with others.

One such method with which we aim to improve our students’ self-confidence is the use of mini presentations. These contribute to the children’s ability to speak in front of each other, even in a foreign language, and therefore overcome “stage fright” at a young age.

Will your children be able to join a group during a trimester?

It is also possible to join a group awhile the trimester is under way if there is a group that corresponds to your child’s level of English and there is still room in the group of maximum 10 students.

Inquiries about this possibility can also be made by way of completing our application form or via the contact page, and once this happens, we reply within one business day.

When it is not possible to join an existing group, it is worth waiting until the formation of the new groups at the beginning of each semester, further information on which is available by clicking here.

Can your child apply even if he or she cannot yet read and write?

Yes, this is not a problem. Of course, he or she will be in a group where the others cannot read and/or write either.

What should students bring to class?

Students should bring:
  1. Notebook (A4)
  2. Pen
  3. Pencil
  4. Colours
  5. Scissors
  6. Glue
  7. Rubber
  8. Pencil Sharpener

Isn’t a class session of 90 minutes too long for younger children?

The 90-minute-long session consists of two parts. One part is about learning new materials, while the other part is about the consolidation and practising of the new material.

Of course, all of this happens in an interactive way, through various games and joyful situational activities, and therefore, we can assure you that our lesson plans are aligned with the ability of the given age group’s ability to concentrate.

Is it necessary for the parents to speak Hungarian for their child to participate in the English language course?

No, this is not necessary. All administrative tasks related to the course take place primarily in Hungarian (but in English as well, where necessary).

Is it possible to make up for missed classes?

There is no possibility for make-up classes, but the parents and the children can see what the group did during the given class session and what the homework is, and so they can catch up with the group at home. Further information about this is sent to the applicants before the course starts.

What is the approach of the language school to homework?

We can differentiate between two types of active learning: in or outside the classroom.

In addition, passive learning, such as listening to music, watching videos or reading short stories can also be very useful.

All three of these are important in the long-run for successful language learning, and our teachers make specific recommendations to the given group to find the right proportions.

On the basis of the above, our approach is not to overburden children with too much homework; instead, we encourage them to keep daily contact with the language. We would give preference to 10 minutes of learning daily over 1 hour per week, with a good balance of active and passive language learning.
